| How Phthalates are Effecting You!
You will be seeing more and more info on Phthalates especially in relation to babies; just in the last week I saw a front-page article in the local newspaper, a segment on the evening news and an article in a magazine. Phthalates are found in a variety of products, they make plastics soft and pliable and are also used in many personal-care products to hold fragrance and color. Phthalates are known to cause chronic health problems, including liver and kidney abnormalities damage to the reproductive system and increasing the risk of allergies, asthma and cancer. Phthalates are known to cause undescended testicles and malformed penises in animals and these two birth defects are on the rise in people. Mothers exposed to Phthalates pass them onto their fetuses. Infants and children are very susceptible to Phthalate poisoning. It is difficult to find out whether a product contains phthalates because the federal law does not require companies to label chemicals if they are not considered key or critical ingredients. The only thing you can do is look for products that explicitly say they do not contain Phthalates. The European Union and California have band Phthalates in children’s products and stores are starting to jump on board including Target, Sears and Kmart. Targets goal is to make most of its name-brand toys phthalate-free by fall 2008.
Here are a few things you should look out for:
- Do not microwave plastic, or put it in the dishwasher. In heating up the plastic you are changing the chemical make-up and releasing the Phthalates into your food.
- Do not put oily or fatty foods in plastic containers.
- Harsh cleaners also release Phthalates.
- Excessive Moisture release Phthalates, this can take place in your shower, the vinyl curtain most likely contains Phthalates.
- Use a reusable water bottle because the water you purchase in a plastic bottle can leak Phthalates.
- Look for shampoos and lotions that are Phthalate-free. This is especially important when it comes to your baby or if you are pregnant!
- Don’t use synthetic air fresheners they often contain Phthalates, by spraying them into the air you then breathe them in!
- Fabric softeners also contain Phthalates.
- Baby toys, teethers and bottles all contain Phthalates, try to buy wooden toys and stick to glass bottles.
