High mass systems utilitze an underground sand bed as seasonal solar storage. Radiant tubing is placed in a sand bed underneath the slab floor of the lowest level of the building and is heated directly by solar water heating collectors. The sand bed allows the homeowner to store significantly more solar heat which enables the building to stay warm during periods of cloudy weather or when the solar resource is low. A high mass system is the best way to use solar heating to get to a zero-energy home and eliminate the most of your carbon footprint.
Artha has also designed both high mass solar heating systems and traditional solar heating systems for all types of non-traditional or alternatively built homes. Including but not limited to: Straw bale, cordwood, rammed earth, earth sheltered and earthen floors.
